An Introduction to Free Schools

The success of the Danish educational system is arguably down to the longstanding marriage between mainstream education and the “Free School” system, which caters for about 20 % of Danish children.

Free Schools may be seen both as an alternative to state schools and also as a complement – a vital reminder that education is not primarily for work but for life, and that learning is individual, lifelong and concerned with the whole person.

While it is deeply rooted in traditions of democracy, community and individual development, Free School thinking is constantly at the cutting edge of educational development and provides a model for teaching and learning that is respected the world over.
